Obviously, you can protect against enemies attacks by recruiting troops to defend your towns. But you can also improve your defense by building a Fort in your town and upgrading it to a Citadel or a Castle. Heroes can also help you defend your towns, giving bonuses though their defense characteristic, artifacts and spells. Don't forget to assign your defensive troops to your defensives heroes.
